7 Quick Takes (Veterans Day Edition)

I will continue to harp on the wonderfulness of Fr. Barron’s Catholicism series, which is in its 3rd production of DVD’s due to high demand. Even my non-Catholic dad has given up his routine Thursday night NBC lineup to watch the series on PBS in Chicago. That’s high praise right there.

If you are still wondering why/if there really is a difference between the Catholic Church and Protestant churches when neither are perfect, read this great post by Brent Stubbs at his blog, The Journey: Almost Not Catholic.

I’m finally done with RCIA!  It’s taken a while because we weren’t on the usual schedule and it was somewhat difficult to coordinate schedules between me, the other candidate, and our priest.  I’m kind of sad that it’s over.  We are so blessed to be at an amazing parish. I’ve heard RCIA horror stories, but I think people should hear that there can be very positive RCIA experiences as well.

Hey, so this whole “personhood” thing… I love, love, love the way “personhood” is always in quotes. I’m wondering if maybe someone will start marketing a new line of greeting cards that say, Congratulations on your “baby”!  Or, You’re expecting! Well, that will be something to be really excited about once your fetus if viable and/or wanted!!!

I am so excited about the Advent season and Christmas this year that I have actually already gotten our girls their Christmas dresses. This is an earth-shattering event in our house as I usually wait till the last moment and discover there’s not a lot left (kind of like the pumpkins at Halloween.)  Hooray for being prepared for once.

Jason attended a meeting last night in preparation for our daughter’s First Penance. Ok, so maybe I made some kind of joke about the priest quitting after her turn, but seriously, it is very exciting for us that this will be easier for her than it was for us and the older kids since she’s starting at the “usual” age.

Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served, and especially my cool big brother, Rob, who is currently on active duty.

  1. Thanks, Nik… like I said on my Facebook post today, thank you to you and your family for making this a country worth defending and sacrificing for.

Question, I don’t recall if you or Jason said anything about the book “Why Do Catholics Do That?” by Kevin Johnson, but I just picked up a copy of it the other day- good? Bad? Indifferent? Haven’t read it? 🙂 Anyway, if you have read it, is it accurate and/or a good reference?

How ironic. That book is sitting on my bedside table. I’ve skimmed the contents but haven’t read it yet. I’ll let you know what I think- now you’ve given me the motivation to read it. Let me know what you think about it, too. Hugs.

  2. I’m only into chapter 2 so far but it’s a good easy read- the author seems to approach things in a very ‘common sense’ type of a style.

    hugs back 🙂

Thanks for the link! Our daughter is getting close to her first penance/communion as well. I will keep her in my prayers. God bless.
